A brush fire that broke out southwest of Heber City a little after 3 p.m. Wednesday grew to approximately 20 acres before crews stopped its progress. A little before 9 p.m., crews reported the fire was 100% contained.

Wasatch County Fire first responded to the Magpie Hill Fire at 3:15 p.m. They initially estimated it was around 5 acres and caused by lightning. The fire was burning an area covered in dry oak and sagebrush and was far away from buildings.

A little over an hour later, Utah Division of Forestry, Fires and State Lands Area Manager Mike Eriksson said crews were "mopping up" the blaze, having stopped its progress.

The blaze began east of Duke Lane in Heber City, between downtown and Daniels Canyon. Wasatch County Fire crews, a bulldozer from Wasatch County Public Works, and personnel from the U.S. Forest Service and Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands responded.

Heber City Police helped keep the area and roads near the burn site clear.

The fire never threatened any structures. Eriksson said while the burn area was on a hill where there are dry conditions, humidity in the air and a little rain helped keep the blaze contained.
